Below is a list of Mary Lin's researched based best practices for homework.
Homework at Mary Lin must be:
o linked to the current content being taught in class
o tailored to address the students’ strengths and weaknesses
o Grounded in the teacher accepting responsibility for the diversity of learners in the class
o Differentiated on an as needed basis for those students who are below or above grade level
o Research supports the 10-minute rule, which states that all daily homework assignments combined should take about as long to complete as 10 minutes multiplied by the student’s grade level. When required reading is included, the 10-minute rule might increase to 15 minutes
o Posted on teachers’ websites
o Copied in agendas by students in grades 3-5
o Feedback on homework assignments is critical

Welcome back! Mary Lin is off to a great start. This morning, as I watched many of our students and parents walk to school, I was reminded of what makes Mary Lin a special place to learn. Mary Lin is truly a community school with outstanding parental support. Thank you so much for making Mary Lin a great school for our boys and girls.
I just finished speaking to our fifth grade students. I reminded them that Mary Lin students never give up. In fact, Mary Lin students are persistent while working through challenging learning activities. We had a discussion about bullying, no cell phones at school, and appropriate cafeteria behavior. Since the students will be working with each other in groups often, we discussed the importance of being respectful to each other, a core value we embrace at Mary Lin.
Our current enrollment is 576. Here is the grade level enrollment information:
Kindergarten 108
First grade 88
Second grade 102
Third grade 93
Fourth grade 98
Fifth grade 87
Thanks for all you do for Mary Lin,
Dr. Mitchell
