       The mission of the Cascade Elementary School Library Media Center Program is to promote effective use of information and resources, to instill an enthusiasm for and enjoyment of reading, and to produce lifelong learners with a global perspective.


 

This mission is accomplished:

·        by providing intellectual and physical access to print andnon-print resources

·        by collaborating with other educators to use all types of librarymaterials and equipment that contribute to instruction

·        by encouraging students to cultivate an interest in reading

·        by library media center staff participating effectively as amember of the school community

·        by assisting students in becoming skillful and discriminating users of print and non-print materials.

Schedule

The Library Media Center is open from 7:30a.m.-3:00 p.m.Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. On Wednesdays the Library Media Center is open until 3:30p.m.

The Library Media Center operates on flexible scheduling. The philosophy of flexible scheduling is to make the Media Center the school's center of learning and to provide students with accessibility tothe Media Center at all times during the school day.

Borrowing Privileges

Students may keep library materials for twoweeks. We do not charge overdue fines; however, any item that is either lost or damaged must be paid fo
  
  

Resources

The Library Media Center houses books(reference, biography, nonfiction, fiction, videos, and a professional teachers' collection), numerous magazine titles, and assess to several online programs. These resources support the mission of the school district and are consistent with its philosophy, goals, and objectives. Resources in school library media collections are an integral component of the curriculum and represent diverse points of view on both current and historical issues. These resources include materials that support the intellectual growth, personal development, individual interests, and recreational needs of students.

The Library Media Center has11 computers for student use. All computers offer internet access, and students may use the internet only if they have a signed parental permission slip on file.

All library functions are fully automated, and students may use the automated system to locate materials in the library.

Staff

Vanessa P.Lawrence is the full-time library media specialist at Cascade. Mrs. Lawrence holds bachelor and masters degrees in Early Childhood Education with an Add-on Certification and Education Specialist in Library Media. Before becoming the library media specialist at Cascade, Mrs. Lawrence taught kindergarten through third grades at Arkwright and Dunbar Elementary Schools.
