Perkerson Elementary's Department of Special Education offers a broad continuum of services for students in grades Kindergarten to Fifth. Following a comprehensive assessment that may include a psychological evaluation, educational testing, speech-language assessment, audiological testing and other assessments, a student may be eligible to receive services for mild disabilities in Emotional/Behavioral Disorders, Other Health Impaired, Specific Learning Disabilities, Speech-Language Impaired, Traumatic Brain Injury, Visually Impaired, Intellectual Disabilities. Delivery models for instruction include inclusion in the regular classroom, resource, or self-contained setting.

For students qualifying for Assistive Technology, Perkerson offers Promethean boards in every inclusive classroom, calculators and other manipulatives provided through our Project Grad Math program, Audiobooks and listening devices are available to support reading as well as the Write Out Loud software available for writing support.

We are required to provide free, appropriate public education to the eligible students of Perkerson Elementary in cooperation with parents and other agencies under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Each eligible student must have an Individualized Education Program (IEP). Gerogia Performance Standards guide the development of the I.E.P. created by a team composed of teachers and other qualified school personnel, parents or guardians and the student, when appropriate. The IEP is revised when necessary and reviewed at least annually.

The State of Georgia requires that all students referred for Special Education Services must first go through the Student Support Team (SST) process. Strategies in the regular education setting must be considered and documented before referral to Special Education can be made.
