W.T. Jackson
Primary Media Center - Mrs. Webb:)
Let the reading fun begin!

I'm super excited about our new year at Jackson Primary!
We'll participate in many fun programs to create enthusiasm for
reading, along with a passion for visiting the media center!

Primary students will participate in Accelerated Reader, reading books
and taking comprehension quizzes on their specific,
customized levels.

Our students are accessed and know their individualized
reading levels, then develop the habit of reading and quizzing
on books appropriate for them. These habits build strong readers!

Last year, first grade ended the year passing 35,260 AR quizzes
and earning
an astounding 17,778 points!! I can't wait to see how
well we do this year!

Rewards are given to keep 1st graders excited about
reading! Examples of prizes for those who meet their quarterly
AR goals while maintaining an 85% accuracy rate on quizzes are:
1st quarter-shiny new quarter
2nd quarter- shiny 50 cent piece
3rd quarter- cool "money" eraser from the bookfair
4th quarter- silver dollar which represents earning 100% of AR
goal!

Some fun facts.....stats ending March 31st....17,658 non-fiction
and 36,895 fiction books were circulated and read.
Our students successfully quizzed on 4528 non-fiction
and 18,111 fiction books!

Our monthly birthday book club celebrations will continue this year.  We celebrate at the end of each month with new book dedications.  The parties are a "win-win" with our students having so much fun choosing new books for our media center.  Check the Galleries for your child's picture holding his or her new birthday book!

We host many author and illustrator visits at Jackson Primary.  Tammy Bronson, author/illustrator of Tiny Snail, Polliwog, and Sea Horse Run paid us a visit. (check Gallery 1 for pics) Diane Shore visited on Jan. 24th during Read-A-Thon with Bus-A-Saurus Bop.  Shana Corey, author of Here Come the Girl Scouts visited on March 12th, which was the Girl Scouts 100th Anniversary.  Fancy Nancy's author, Jane O'Connor, is coming May 4th!!!!

We are learning how to use the library, while focusing on literacy skills and IB lessons.  We learn about tall tales, fairy tales, and folktales.  In the process, we increase our knowledge of dictionaries, almanacs, atlases, and encyclopedias, and read all those Georgia Book Award nominees!  We'll also enjoy Read-A-Thon and Scholastic Book Fair events (gallery 4).

We use the computer lab for AR quizzing, STARFall, BrainPop, First in Math, and many other fun sites.  We also have fun with our Promethean board, watching books come alive with Tumble Books and other e-book sites.

The main objective of the W.T. Jackson Primary library media program is to instill a love of reading in each child, teaching information literacy skills which lead to lifelong, independent learning. Students visit the media center for Accelerated Reader and other instructional tech. lab use, read-alouds, literature promotion, library skills instruction, research projects, and book selection.

I really enjoy your little ones and we are having a fabulous year!
